The
North River Derrick Company was formed in 1891 at Hoboken, New Jersey
as a subsidiary of the W. & A. Fletcher Company (originally named
the North River Iron Works, founded in 1853). The company was owned by
Andrew Fletcher Sr. and his sons to support their iron works on the
southernmost portion of the Hudson River at Hoboken (“North River”). Andrew Fletcher
Jr. succeeded his father as company president following his death,
and his other son, Henry N. Flethcher, became vice president.
